External Resource: ‘Beyond: Transforming Housing and Homes for Future Generations’ Talk
In this talk, delivered as part of the Beyond 2024 Conference, Prof Jo Patterson explores the role of housing as a fundamental component of creative, sustainable and resilient cities.

Drawing on insights from the Transforming Homes project, she discusses:
- The challenges facing the existing housing stock, including rising energy costs, poor environmental performance and the impact of housing conditions on health and wellbeing.
- The importance of co-design in housing transformation, ensuring that residents, local authorities and supply chain stakeholders are actively involved in shaping solutions.
- The value of the original design of 1920 to 1940 council-built housing in the UK, and the need to preserve its strengths while integrating low-carbon technologies, bio-based materials and other measures that improve living environments.
- The role of design research in bringing together different forms of expertise and embedding stakeholder knowledge throughout the housing transformation process.
